Guethary
a village on the Basque coast
Region: Aquitaine Departement: (64) Pyrenees Atlantiques Locality: Pays Basque
Guethary is a cliff top village overlooking the ocean and the beaches
Guethary is the smallest village in the Basque coast between Biarritz and St Jean de Luz
GUETHARY was a fishermen's village, famous for hunting whales (XIII & XIV centuries) before welcoming the pioneers of
sea bathing (1900) and later on the first european surfers (1960)
Situated in the middle of the Basque coast, this cliff top village
overlooking the ocean is an ideal starting point to discover the Basque
country (Biarritz,
St Jean de Luz...).
GUETHARY is also famous for its typical architecture (basque & neo-basque art-deco style)
its culture, contemporary art exhibitions in the municipal museum,
craftsmen, gastronomy... and its seaside, typical port, the beaches
and great waves for surfers.
Many festive activities and events are proposed in summer like Basque pelota ball games, concerts.
