THE LANDES department has 11,000 acres of lakes and ponds, 600 km of waterways second class, 1,600 km of streams and rivers of the first category and 150km of coastline on the Atlantic.
In the rivers, you can fish for 'goujons', 'ablettes', 'gardons', carp, pike and eels, trout and silures, and for the more experienced anglers,
there are also the migrant species like 'alose', 'lamproie', salmon' and mulets in season.
Night fishing for carp and fly fishing are authorized at certain times every year.
In the lakes, perch, tench, pike, black-bass and 'sandre' are common.
THE PYRENEES ATLANTIQUES has more than 3000 Kilometers of rivers and streams, often called "Nives" and "Gaves" locally. 1st Category rivers have salmon, trout both wild and farmed, fario and sea trout. 2nd category rivers have carnivores, carp and white fish.
In the lowland lakes, you can fish for the carnivores, carp and white fish.
500 ha are navigable and allow carp fishing at night.
In the mountain lakes, Fario, Brook trout and Arctic char abound.
Fishing permits are required at all times and can be bought for just a day.
Surf-casting is practiced all along the coast, depending on the tides and swell, as well as fishing for sole, sea bream, turbot and bar from the rocks and harbour walls.
Permits are not needed for fishing in the sea, but it is absolutely forbidden to sell anything you catch.
