Just 3 kms from the centre of
Biarritz and 5 kms from the Golf de Biarritz le Phare,
the Ilbarritz Golf training centre was designed and constructed in 1988 by the architect
Pierre Thevenin, to revolutionize the method of golf training and to coincide with the
100th anniversary of the Phare golf club.
The Biarritz - Bidart site was chosen for its
beautiful location, on top of the cliffs
with undulating hills and water obstacles, to host a long awaited first European golf
training centre, built in the same style as the existing centers in Japan and the USA. It
is a 14 hectares (35 acres) complex, which permits amateur or professional players to
train or to perfect techniques.
All possible difficulties and obstacles found on a golf
course are recreated by 13
practice areas organized in progressive stages (different types of slopes, bunkers, water,
bushes and trees, and ground variations with different types of rough and greens).
The practice areas are connected by a circular pathway, with some areas covered for all
weather uses. The centre offers golf tuition of the highest standards, for groups or
individual lessons, whether for initiation, improvement or just general information
as to what choice of club for distance, with professional teachers from France, USA and
Spain and excellent equipment.
The par 32, 2176m, 9 hole course surrounding the centre is a
typical half of any 18 hole
course. It was designed to test old established or new techniques or just for the
enjoyment of a round.
