Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port was an important town, cross-roads of the route to Saint Jacques de Compostelle, at the foot of the mountain pass, the Col de Ronceveaux.

This medieval city has a citadel with splendid views over the countryside and mountains!

Stroll the typically narrow streets between pink sandstone walls that hide steeply sloped gardens.
Perimeter gates protect the city, the door of St Jacques (UNESCO World Heritage) which was the historic entrance for the Jacques de Compostela pilgrims, hence its name.
The Gothic church built in the 12th century is listed as a historical monument.
The "Bishops' prison" is worth a visit on the Citadel street and the "Notre dame" bridge with its thirteenth century foundations, spans the Nive river at the entrance to St Jean Pied de Port.

Surrounded by mountains, on the Nive riverside, St Jean Pied de Port has a rich history and architecture  and is undoubtedly the most beautiful city in the North Basque Country.
